How to Discover Your Grandparent Superpowers

What’s your grandparent superpower?

You have one, you know. Maybe more.

Psalm 139:3 says, “ . . . you are familiar with all my ways.”

God is not only familiar with all your ways, He designed many of them.

Romans 12:6 reads, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith.” 

1 Corinthians 12:7, 11 says, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good . . . All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”

Who are you? What superpowers has God wired into you? 

Because God has uniquely crafted you to speak into your grandchildren right now. 

For such a time is this. 

Let’s dive in. 

1. Life Theme 

Have you ever considered your life theme? 

Write down your three favorite movies, five if you can think of them. 

Look for common themes. What resonates with you in each of those films? 

Chances are, it’s your life theme.

Here are the elements that resonate with me: strong faith elements, adventure, danger, a journey, family, relationships, action, true love never fails and stepping into one’s destiny. 

My life theme: God, Discipleship, and Destiny. 

2. Passions or Burdens 

For what are you passionate? 

What burdens you? 

I’m passionate about discipleship and teaching God’s Word. 

Especially when it comes to children. 

What’s on your heart?

3. Strengths, Weaknesses, And Spiritual Gifts 

What are your strengths? 

Your spiritual giftings? 

Also, what are your weaknesses? Where have you struggled? 

So, why do I mention weaknesses? 

First, so you can play to your strengths.

Second, because everyone struggles. Sharing those struggles shows authenticity in your faith walk. People, even grandchildren, connect over struggle, not perfection. 

I struggle to extend mercy, to myself and to others. I was raised in a performance-driven home. Grace wasn’t on the menu. I’m trying to change that.

4. Expertise 

What do you know? What have you experienced? 

I’m willing to bet you know a lot more than you think, and there’s probably a spiritual parallel for each one. 

My expertise/experiences include: 

Parenting (4 kids)

Teaching swim lessons

Cooking (I’m a foodie)

Marathon running

Hiking

National parks

Dog lover (Belgian Malinois)

Kid lit (If you have a boy struggling to find reading material, I can find something for him.) 

Mother with dementia

Broken arm

Parent of a prodigal child

CrossFit

Child of divorce

List your areas of expertise and spaces where you have experience.

5. Interests 

What interest you? Do you like to read? If so, what? 

Movies? What kind? 

Do you shop? Are you a bargain hunter? 

Do you like crafts? 

Are you a DIY type? 

How about music? 

All these will bring layers to your superpower. 

Note I mentioned many of my interests in the expertise section. When you pursue an interest long enough, you become an expert. 

6. Others 

What do others see in you? When others come to you for advice, what are they asking about? What are you the go-to person for? 

7. Style and Personality 

Lastly, let’s look at your style. Your personality. 

There are loads of personality tests you may find helpful in discovering more about yourself. I have a few in the Resources below.

My writer friend Lori uses humor regularly. I can be funny too, but my sense of humor is very different from hers.

I’m an introvert, but when I teach, I come alive because I love it. 

All seven areas reflect God’s craftsmanship. His design in you. Still not sure. Let’s ask Him. 

Father God, You are the Master Designer. You crafted each of us uniquely. Reveal our individual designs and how to use them to further Your kingdom, beginning with our grandchildren. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

God has given you the ability to communicate your faith in a unique way that will connect with your grandchildren like no other person can. 

Life theme, passions/burdens, strengths, weaknesses, and spiritual gifts, expertise/life experience, interests, how others see you, and your style/personality.
