Got Shepherd?

Harassed. Helpless. That was me a week ago.

A computer issue arose when I changed websites. My task for the day: fix it. Tech savvy, I’m not. (Ask my children. They’ll tell you, once they stop laughing hysterically.) An hour and a half later, I was frustrated, in tears, and ready to swear at someone, anyone.

Harassed by my computer. Helpless to fix it.

Here’s the Shepherd’s staff God held out to me.

When he (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matthew 9:36 NIV)

Without a shepherd, sheep are open to a host of problems:

  • The sheep pecking order
  • Predators
  • Weather
  • Insects
  • Stickers, poisonous plants, and other natural hazards

Helpless against such problems. Harassed without mercy.

My lesson?

I don’t belong to that flock. And neither do you.

We have a Shepherd. One who promises:

  • Protection
  • Rest
  • Nourishment
  • Guidance
  • Care

Note that the previous list has not disappeared. The presence of the Shepherd changes how they affect His sheep.

Back to the computer. In frustration, I went on to something else. After a while, I sensed God’s quiet nudge to go back and try again. A thought came to my mind and I tried a different approach.

I was done in ten minutes.

If harassed and helpless describes you today, stop. Right now.

Go to your Shepherd. Tell Him your need and receive what He gives, even if you have to wait a bit.

The presence of the Shepherd makes the difference.

Questions:

Which of the sheep problems would bother you most? Why?

How does a shepherd deal with that problem?

What current problem bothers you most?

How would your Shepherd deal with it?
