God’s Character Qualities

God's Character Qualities

Gracious. Compassionate. Slow to anger. Abounding in love. He relents from sending calamity.

We see these qualities of God in numerous Old Testament verses (Exodus 34:6-7; Nehemiah 9:17; Psalm 86:15; 103:8; Joel 2:13; Jonah 4:2)

We see it with skin in the Gospels, beginning in Bethlehem. Humbly. Quietly. The hoopla limited to a few ragtag shepherds. (No, the Magi were not at the stable. See Matthew 2:9-11)

Jesus is often called the exegesis of God the Father. Exegesis means to explain the original meaning of a text. In Jesus we see all the attributes of the Father.

Gracious. Compassionate. Slow to anger. Abounding in love. He relents from sending calamity. Those qualities stood out in Jesus’ world of Roman occupation, Herodian immorality, and human brokenness.

They stand out today too.

Because our world prefers to extend judgment rather than grace.

Because our world would rather take offense than show restraint.

Because our world abounds in sin which is way more fun and way easier than abounding in love.

Jesus showed us what His Father was like. Likewise, we are to show what Jesus is like.

Gracious. Compassionate. Slow to anger. Abounding in love. He relents from sending calamity.

Hearts can soften during the holidays. Shine the light of our Savior, but don’t stop after December. Let the season serve as a warm-up for next year’s witness.

“Then Jesus cried out, ‘Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.’”(John 12:44-46 NIV)

Be Jesus with skin.
