Skeptical Grandkids and God’s Free Samples
Anytime you want to try a new product before you commit to buying in, you sample it first.
Free samples.
Test drives.
Product testing.
What if we applied this process—to Jesus?
Do you have a grandchild who is unsure about this whole Jesus thing? Whether a friend, co-worker, or a grandchild, we all have people in our lives that have yet to commit to our faith. What if we pointed them to God’s free samples?
God has them, you know. Ways of showing His goodness on a regular basis.
Creation, blessings, and compassion.
God’s Free Sample of Creation
Romans 1:20 says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made so that people are without excuse.”
Creation. Wow. Talk about a free sample. It’s a whole feast.
Recently my husband and I watched Ken Burn’s documentary on the national parks. Over and over, visiting the parks was described as a spiritual experience.
Every corner of creation exhibits God’s intelligent design from the unique flutter of a dove’s wings to the blinking of the human eye.
The mourning dove’s wings make a whistling noise, a sound that scares off predators and alerts other birds to danger. Their flight feathers are structured to vibrate as the wing flaps. Upstrokes produce lower notes, downstrokes higher ones.
Or consider your own eye. With more than 2 million working parts, its complexity is second only to your brain.
Use creation to connect the dots of God’s goodness.
God’s Free Sample of Blessing
Matthew 5:45 reads, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” God extends many of His blessings to everyone.
Can you help them connect the dots when they experience blessing?
What are they thankful for?
To what or whom did they attribute it? Luck? Coincidence? Hmm, could it be God?
Plant that thought in their mind. The holidays are a great time to showcase this God-quality.
God’s Free Sample of Compassion
Psalm 145:9 says. “The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all He has made.”
God knows our sin and loves us anyway. We don’t have to get it together before we come to Him.
But we do need to come.
As you pray for unsaved friends and family,
- Pray that God would draw them, that they would connect God’s free samples to Jesus’s love for them. John 6:44 says, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them.” Open their eyes to that drawing. God-moments. “Coincidences.”
- Scripture speaks of a veil that covers the heart of unbelievers. Ask God to remove it. 2 Corinthians 3:16 reads, “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”
- Matthew 19:14 reads, “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Ask the Holy Spirit to remove all hindrances, opening the way for that person to come to Jesus.
Let’s pray now:
Father God, draw our grandchildren to Yourself. Open their eyes to Your work in their lives. Remove the veil and any other hindrances to their faith in Jesus. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
Free samples. Show them God’s goodness through His creation, His blessings, and His compassion. Pray for buy-in. A faith commitment to the finished work of Jesus.
