How to Build Faith in Your Grandchildren on Mother’s Day

From aunts to daughters and daughters-in-love to moms-to-be, these are the stellar moms in my family. Each one is precious to me. Join me in celebrating the moms in your life, but go one step further. Use Mother’s Day as an opportunity to build faith in your grandchildren.
Intentionality requires some planning, so we’re starting now.
As Mother’s Day approaches, take the opportunity to celebrate.
1. Celebrate your daughters and your daughters-in-law.
Go all out. You still have those love languages from Valentine’s Day, right? These moms need to know you’re in their corner:
- For prayer at the very least, if, like us, you don’t live near them.
- For support and breaks if, and when, you can give them.
- And for encouragement, because you’ve been there.
Proverbs 31:30-31 reads, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”
You’ll also model to the grandchildren that Mom’s a big deal—because she is.
2. Talk up motherhood with the grandchildren.
What if there were no mothers?
How would life change?
What do mothers do anyway?
Ask your grandkids about what it would be like to trade places with Mom for a day. Ask for your grandchild’s to-do list and then ask for Mom’s. Do a side-by-side comparison. Then, have them come up with a way to help Mom.
“She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” Proverbs 31:27
3. Read about famous moms in the Bible with your grandchildren.
Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, Tamar, Ruth, Hannah, Mary and Elizabeth, Eunice and Lois. And don’t forget Moses’s brave mom, Jochebed. One surrogate/substitute mom whose story is a fun read is Jehosheba, an aunt who saved her infant nephew from death and cared for him for years (2 Chronicles 22:10-12). The Proverbs 31 woman was a mom too.
Who’s your favorite and why?
Each had their challenges. What can we learn from them?
“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” 2 Timothy 1:5
4. Interviews
Have your grandchildren interview their mother. Challenge them come up with questions, but feel free to get them started.
What do you enjoy most about being a mom?
What do you like the least?
What’s the hardest part about being a mom?
What’s your mom superpower?
Why did you choose to become a mom?
How do you pray for each of us?
How can we make your job easier?
Have your grandchildren interview their dad.
How do you and Mom work as a team when it comes to taking care of us?
What does Mom do well?
What do you see as her superpower? Does she know this?
How can we thank her?
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12
Get creative. Don’t limit yourself to my ideas. Pray about it and see how God leads you, but don’t let the holiday go by without upholding the high calling of motherhood. Celebrate!
Prayer: Father God, thank You for mothers. As we esteem the moms in our lives, may we lead the grandkids in showing love, honor, and respect to those who care so much for them. Help them see the high calling of motherhood. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
