Pick Up Your Sling: Using Your Unique Abilities

“Then he [David] took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17: 40 NIV)

A stick, a piece of leather, and some rocks.

Simple tools David had used for years. They had been part of his life since childhood.

What is your staff? Your sling? Your rocks? What tools has God given you that fit you best? If you’re an adult, look back. What abilities, likes, and giftings did God give you—even as a child? If you’re a kid, ask someone who knows you well. What talents do they see in you?

Not that you won’t need training in using them. Scripture tells us in Judges 20:16 of seven hundred Benjamite soldiers, all lefties, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. Imagine the hours of practice to reach that skill level.

I wonder how many clay pots, family pets, and older brothers David hit as he practiced. Ooops. Sorry, Mom. As David’s mom fussed at him for messing with his sling, she never dreamed that one day he would bring down a giant. She never dreamed as he left the tent with his staff in his hand, that one day he would lead, not sheep, but men. As he sifted through rocks, looking for the perfect one, she never dreamed that one day he would wear precious stones, diamonds, emeralds, and rubies, as King of Israel.

It began with a stick, a piece of leather, and some rocks.

What tools has God placed in your hands? And where will it lead?

Pick up your sling and start practicing.
