The In-Between Days

It’s Advent time. Christmas trees primp and preen as they don their seasonal finery. Mistletoe dangles from the ceiling. Candles and poinsettias elbow one another for the most prominent display spot. Our homes glitter, glow, and gleam as we celebrate the Light of the world.

I love to spend time reflecting over the Christmas accounts in Matthew and Luke during December. This year, one verse caught me, “And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.” Luke 2:40 NIV

This verse speaks of Jesus’ in-between days.

In between His birth and the arrival of the Magi.

In between the escape to Egypt and the journey to Nazareth.

In between the trip to the Temple at age twelve and His trip to the Jordan River in His thirties.

Normal days.

Days when Baby Jesus was fussy, and Mary immediately handed Him to Joseph when he got home from work.

Days when His endless little-boy energy sapped Mary of hers.

Days when His inexhaustible supply of questions left Joseph (and the temple leaders) speechless.

The in-between days.

Jesus had them. Years worth.

And so do we. We note the highpoints. The milestones. Firsts. Lasts.

But the life of faithfulness is forged during the in-between days.

It’s here the desire to quit assaults us. The desire to give in. To throw in the white spit-up cloth and be done.

Persevere, because here, God’s grace meets you, just as it met Jesus.

Persevere, because here, God walks with us in the midst of the ordinary, one plodding step at a time.

Persevere, because here, in the daily grind, God changes us.

The grace of God is upon you, especially on the in-between days.
