The Director of Thanksgiving

Our church fields an extensive staff. Pastors exist for every ministry imaginable. However, Scripture records one office I have yet to see: Director of Thanksgiving. Check out the verses below.

“Mattaniah son of Mika, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, the director who led in thanksgiving and prayer;” Nehemiah 11:17

“The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and also Mattaniah, who, together with his associates, was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving.” Nehemiah 12:8

“For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the musicians and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.” Nehemiah 12:46

King David specifically designated an office for thanksgiving. So, who holds this title in your home? Will you serve as the Director of Thanksgiving for your family?

Thanksgiving (not the holiday) begins at the kitchen table. You don’t need kids to make it happen, though if you have them, they should be in training. Our family enjoyed an activity called Rainbow and Cloud (or High and Low). Share your high point of the day and your low point. It’s a great way to catch up. Then take it another step. Add God. How did you see God at work in your high point?  How did God manifest His presence in your low point?

God’s presence infuses every moment. Do we look for Him? Do we connect the dots as He moves? And do we thank Him for all He does?

Take up the mantle of Director of Thanksgiving. Establish new habits this month and proclaim God’s goodness every day.
