Spiritual Growth: Does Yours Add Up?

Adding value. My new challenge to myself for spiritual growth. A challenge to move beyond my schedule, my agenda, and my to-do list and intentionally add value through my words or actions. Every day. Adding kindness, thoughtfulness, and if it’s your lucky day, maybe some chocolate chip cookies too. A little love plus effort equals relationship.

Peter too challenges us to do some math in the spiritual growth department.

“For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.” (2 Peter 1:5-9 NIV)

So, start with faith. What is one thing you believe?

  • I believe God is always with me. (Faith)
  • Therefore I will not fear and will be calm and at peace. This benefits those around me. (Goodness) How to do this? Keep a reminder at hand—jewelry, stickers, praise music—and stand on His promise. If you feel anxious, stop and pray until you sense His peace.
  • When I obey by acting in faith on His promise (possibly through the prayer or praise music mentioned above), I get to know God better because I experience Him through His peace which passes all understanding. (Knowledge)
  • When I remember He is with me and the peace I received from Him (Knowledge), it gives me the self-control I need to not be anxious or worried the next time I’m stressed. (Self-control)
  • I remember He was there before and He is there now. I ask for His peace when I need it. I do this consistently until it becomes a habit. (Perseverance)
  • This habit of walking through life with Him becomes part of my character. (Godliness)
  • As I exhibit His character through my peace, my words and actions build up others because they reflect His presence with me, and the peace He continues to give. (Kindness)
  • God’s love and peace flow through me and I help others find His peace too. (Love)

At what point of faith will you begin today? Here are some verses to get you started. Walk your children through this too.

God is always with me. (Hebrews 13:5)

God will provide all I need. (Philippians 4:19)

When I am weak, He is strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Perfect love casts out fear. (1 John 4:18)

If I love God, I will obey Him. (John 14:15)

Add to your faith this year. And remember, God’s math always multiplies.

Questions:

What will be your faith starting point?

Is there something you or a family member is dealing with that could benefit from this process?

Have you practiced this before?

What were your results?

What point of faith can you walk your children through?
