As we shelter in place, our neighborhood has filled with walkers, runners, and cyclists. Valor, our Belgian Mal, loves the extra walks he’s getting as we manage all of the indoor together time.

But what an opportunity! Check out this passage:

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:4-7 NIV

Sitting, walking, lying down, and getting up. Whatever we’re doing, we’ve got lots of extra family time. What if we coordinated our time with God and set the stage for discussions through the day? Here are a few ideas to walk out that passage:

1. Choose a memory verse for the week. Tailor it to your family. Do you need patience? Try Ephesians 4:2-3, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Are you stressed? Read Philippians 4:5b-7, “The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Get everyone involved and have a prize for each one who memorizes it by week’s end.

2. Choose a passage for the day or for the week. How about something historical in which real people overcame trials—like a plague? Check out Numbers 25, 2 Samuel 24/1 Chronicles 21, and of course, Exodus 7-12. Or, study your favorite Bible heroes. One of my favorites is an unsung princess, Jehosheba, who squares off against the evil daughter of Jezebel. You can find her in 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22:10-23:21.

3. Worship together. Let each person choose a song. Try out the kids’ music and introduce them to something old school, like a hymn. You can find some updated versions more to their liking (try Shane and Shane). If you haven’t seen Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, and Elevation’s The Blessing, here’s the link: https://youtube.com/watch?v=Zp6aygmvzM4.

4. Pray together. Allow everyone to express any fear, anxiety, or stress. Now is the time to let God shine. Is this time bringing financial challenges? Bring them to God and watch how He will come through. Are you financially secure? Thank Him and pray about how to help others. Deal with any fear, anxiety, and stress with worship, prayer, and the Word. Hold your ground and stand firm in His peace.

As we shelter in place, remember, we shelter in Him. Love you guys!

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”
