Rapid Repentance: Make an Immediate U-Turn

Thank goodness for GPS. I find it indispensable as I navigate DFW. Normally I don’t travel too far from my cozy suburb in north Fort Worth, but sometimes school and my favorite daughter require a trip to the dark side—Dallas. When I miss a turn, the GPS faithfully reroutes me. The sooner I turn around, the sooner I can escape Dallas traffic and reach my destination.

No one purposefully drives the wrong way. Though the voice on the GPS annoys me, I know I need to listen when I’m in unfamiliar territory.

Do I consider God’s voice as indispensable?

Directions: I use my GPS when I’m unsure of how to get from A to B whether I have a general idea or no clue at all. GPS offers specific directions, one step at a time, with the added knowledge of which traffic snarls to avoid. Likewise, God knows His plan for my life and how to get there. I must rely on the GPS of His word and the Holy Spirit.

“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:16

Rerouting: GPS gives instructions right down to the final seconds of a decision. Wrong turns happen for lots of reasons. Confusion (Turn now?). Inattention (Phone took a nosedive to the floor). Choosing my own route (I know I turned here last time.). GPS immediately reroutes me, but I have to acknowledge my error.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1:8

Rapid Repentance: In Matthew 11:20-24, Jesus gave an interesting indictment to the cities in which He had preached and performed miracles. He compared them to Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom, pagan cities with little knowledge of God. The issue? Response—or lack of one. When God reveals sin in our lives, He expects a response of rapid repentance. An immediate U-turn.

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25

No delay. No debate. No defiance.

Turn around. Get back on track.

Rapid repentance.

(The idea of rapid repentance came from Bob Sorge and his book Secrets of the Secret Place.)
