Increasingly, culture tries to convince us the genders should be fluid. Not only does culture de-emphasize the differences between the genders, but it also tells us they’re interchangeable.

Let’s look at Scripture:

1. God created two genders. Genesis 1:27 reads, “So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.”
2. God designed the genders to work together. Sin made this more difficult, but it doesn’t change God’s original intent. Genesis 2:20-22 says, “But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man.”
3. The male/female dynamics are mysterious. Why mysterious? Because we’re different and our differences benefit both genders. Proverbs 30:18-19 tells us, “There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a young woman.”
4. God values each gender equally. “Weaker” in the following verse refers to physical capabilities. Peter stated that women function as partners and heirs. 1 Peter 3:7 reads, ”Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”

Now, let’s go to science. 

Leonard Sax, M. D. Ph. D. in his book, Why Gender Matters, made these statements:

• “The lack of awareness of gender differences has the unintended consequence of reinforcing gender stereotypes.” (p. 24)
• “You cannot turn a falcon into a robin or a dove. You will merely succeed in ruining the falcon.” (p. 21)
• “But the fact that each child is unique and complex should not blind us to the fact that gender is one of the two great organizing principles in child development—the other principle being age.” (p. 8)
• “Ignoring gender differences disadvantages both boys and girls.” (p. 11)

Rather than mixing, erasing, or switching genders, let’s seek to better understand the differences and to embrace them as part of God’s sovereign design.

Resources: James Dobson’s Bringing Up Boys and Bringing Up Girls are classics. Leonard Sax’s Why Gender Matters is very informative from a hard data, scientific perspective. I don’t know if he is a believer and I didn’t agree with everything he said, but he has wise words in dealing with gender confusion and in dealing with the sexes with regard to issues at home, school, and general parenting.
