Lamp Light

Lamps.

They illuminate darkness. They give light.

The first thing God spoke into existence was light, and the writers of Scripture use light imagery to describe Him. The prophet Habakkuk draws this picture of God, “His splendor is like the sunrise; rays flashed from His hand, where his power was hidden.” (Hab. 3:4 NIV)

Light. Radiance. Sunlight. So bright it pierces your eyes and brings you to your knees. Paul tells us this Light was deposited in every believer, “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Each who bears Christ’s name is a lamp that’s been lit. A clay Jack-o-lantern of sorts.

Jesus said, “You are the light of this world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

So, are you hiding your light?

Do your hands flash with His rays as you comfort a child or reach out to a neighbor?

Is it easier to be politically correct than to defend your faith to those who would label you?

Are you bringing light to your secular workplace or school?

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within is darkness, how great is that darkness.” (Matthew 6:2-23)

Is your dimmer switch on?

God has chosen to place His Spirit into simple vessels of clay—you and me. Formed from the dust we walk on. Holding heaven’s brightest flame.

Are we functioning as His lamps?

Dispelling darkness.

Bring clarity.

Calming fear.

Exposing evil.

Creating room for good.

Giving life and healing.

Jesus said to the church of Ephesus in Revelation 2:4-5 says, “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”

Stay true to your Light and your purpose as His lamp.
