Fasting: Making Room for God

Scoot over. Make room. By fasting?

Have you ever saved a place for a friend? The seat right next to you so there’s easy access for conversation and fun?

I love it when someone’s saved a spot for me. I know I’m valued, wanted, treasured.

Guess what? God has a place by His side. He’s saved it for you and it’s available 24/7.

Have you saved one for Him?

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6: 33 NIV)

But how? Try a fast.

Lent begins this week. Every year, I challenge myself and the kids to give up one thing to better focus on God and to prepare for Easter. And I’m flexible. Here are some suggestions:

  • Chocolate
  • Soda
  • Desserts
  • Caffeine
  • Junk food
  • TV time
  • Video games
  • Sleep (as in getting up a little earlier or not sleeping in)

For kids, I don’t advocate missing meals. For adults, choosing to fast one meal a day is certainly an option. Just remember, the goal of a fast is to spend the extra time with God, not just survive the cravings, headaches, or hunger pains. Let those things be your reminder to read your Bible, listen to some praise music, or just talk with Him.

Seek ye first. Scoot something over. Make room for God.

Questions:

Have you ever fasted or given something up to humble yourself and to focus on God?

What clutters your schedule that might be keeping God at a distance?

How do you think God feels about it?

What might happen if you moved something?

Choose one thing to scoot over this week.

If you’re up for the challenge, keep it going until Easter. Journal what happens when you save God a spot.
