Don’t Chase the Add-Ons

Don't Chase the Add-Ons

North Texas produced a bumper crop of wildflowers this spring. As I traveled from DFW to Wichita Falls, to Waco, and to Austin, my eyes feasted on bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, Mexican hats, buttercups, and blanket flowers. Blues and yellows, reds and oranges, and pinks and purples splashed the spring green of new grass. Jesus pointed to the Galilean wildflowers to illustrate the richness of a relationship with Him:

And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:28-33 NASB)

Don't chase the add-ons. Seek first the big things. His kingdom. His righteousness. Click To Tweet

Things you don’t want to do without. Can you imagine life without them? Yet it’s not what we chase first. Think of what we often sacrifice to chase manmade silk flowers while missing the blue ribbon blooms that grow naturally from a close relationship with Him.

God promises to add the others. The “necessities.” The ones we spend so much time chasing after, working for, and using up. We clutch the add-ons with a white-knuckled grip. Scarcity scares us. We can imagine life without these. But like the aroma of jasmine on a breeze, God’s faithfulness overpowers the smell of fear, the scent of worry, ‘cause not even honeysuckle tastes sweet when your stomach is in knots from a stack of bills.

But seek first means doing the hard things (Think spiritual yardwork.):

  • Put it on the calendar.
  • Get up a little earlier.
  • Set regular time aside in the your day.
  • Adjust the playlist.
  • Lift up the prayer list.
  • Keep a record of God moments and answered prayer.
  • Be still while the to-do list waits.
  • Trust God to add the rest.

He will, you know, because He who promises is faithful, even when we are not.

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” 2 Timothy 2:13

He who dresses the Texas wildflowers will give you all you need—and then some.
