Riding the Spiritual Scooter

My kids like to scooter. They zoom through the neighborhood, jumping curbs and coasting down driveways. One foot pushes like mad, while the other stands rock steady and enjoys the ride. When they scooter, their feet have two different perspectives. One pounds the pavement and propels them forward. The other foot provides stability and direction and enjoys a different perspective on the scooter itself. Check out Colossians 3; 1, 2 (NIV) with me:

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

When we become Christ-followers, we jump on a spiritual scooter with a foot in both worlds—life on earth and spiritual life with access to heavenly things. The two must work together. When we set our minds on things above, the Holy Spirit gives us stability, direction, and enables us to “ride” or live as He desires. This is our spiritual foot.

However, our Christian life must be lived out in a real and practical way. The foot on the ground must push for the scooter to go anywhere. The “earthly foot” reflects the power and perspective of the “spiritual foot” through practical obedience: telling the truth, obeying parents, letting others go first, and giving up the last bit of ice cream to someone else. Obedience propels our spiritual life forward just like the foot on the ground pushes the scooter.

So, check your feet. Set your mind on the things that are important to God and put them into practice. You’re in for a sweet ride.
