Covert Operations: Part 3

Today, I’ll brief you on the final covert op in Matthew 6. Feel free to glance back at the last two Cross Training entries for Parts 1 & 2.

“ ‘ When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who is sees what is done in secret, will reward you.’ “      Matthew 6: 16-18 (NIV)

Fasting is when a person chooses to go without food for a period of time in order to focus on God(usually one day, but sometimes longer). When they feel hungry, they are reminded to pray. Fasting takes other forms too by giving up something in order to spend more time with God( TV, video game time, or sleep). In Jesus’ time, some people made a big show of fasting. They wanted everyone to know how spiritual they were. Jesus said you should act so normal that no one but God should ever know that you are fasting.

Covert Mission 3: Secret Fasting

Here are some ideas:

Exchange some TV or video game time for God time; read the Bible or go to your prayer spot.

Allow someone else to go first.

Give someone else the last piece or scoop of __________________.

Good luck! Remember, your Commander is watching.
