Covert Operations: Part 1

We love the military. We have been fortunate to know Navy SEALS, Green Berets, Stealth Fighter pilots, and many more who faithfully serve our country. They have a big cool factor, but often model a humble spirit. Their work is classified and they specialize in covert operations.

God calls us to some covert operations too. Jesus mentions three specific covert ops in Matthew 6. I’ll brief you on the first one today:

“ ‘Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6: 1-4 (NIV)

Here’s your assignment:

Covert Mission 1: Acts of righteousness, giving to the needy – secretly

Talk to Mom and Dad about the needs around you. Your church may also be able to direct you to some needy families or individuals. Here are some ideas:

*Prepare a backpack of school supplies and give it to a school counselor for a needy student.

*Do some yard work for an elderly person.

*Make cards or goodies for residents at a nursing home, a shut-in from church, or a senior center.

* Someone may have a financial need. As a family, talk about what you could give up to meet that need and then give anonymously.

What ideas will you share?
