3 Tips for Keeping Things Hot With Your Main Squeeze

So, how’re things with your main squeeze? What’s the temperature of your relationship? Hot, cold, or lukewarm?

God loves heat. A heart aflame for Him and for others. Check out this verse from Revelation:

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. (Revelation 3:1 NIV)

Jesus spitting? Why?

Room temperature relationships. Lukewarm action.

Here’s my main squeezes and three tips for keeping things hot.

Main Squeezes:

  • God
  • Hubby
  • Kids (#1-4)

Tip 1: Make a Date Daily

Fire requires fuel, a steady feeding of kindling and logs. Our relationships must be fed too.

Will God own a place on our daily schedule or will He only make the Sunday list? Five minutes with Him is better then twenty-four hours without Him.

Examine your spouse time. Does it resemble a business meeting? Kid tag team? By all means, cover your bases, (we do, all four of them) but go deeper. Set clear boundaries for the kids. Mom and Dad need time to reconnect, even if it’s just ten to fifteen minutes. This will teach them to do the same with their spouses. Win-win: life lessons and quality time.

Kid dates prove more difficult for me. On a daily basis, I plan time to be available. With my daughter, it’s usually after school or at the breakfast table. My youngest presents more of a challenge though he’s always up for a trip to someplace with food.

Bottom line: Schedule it and teach your kids to do the same.

Tip 2: Just Say No

Tip 1 is about to get much easier. Grab your calendar. What is eating your time?

Several years ago, I found a lump in my right breast. Guess what? The calendar cleared real fast. My priorities crystallized in a heartbeat. No cancer, thankfully, but I learned where my heart was. And it wasn’t PTA, work, or the athletic booster club.

We must say no to good things to make room for great things. And main squeezes are the best things. Seriously, are we going to wish we had worked more or attended more PTA meetings while our main squeezes grew cold? Probably not.

Again, do the same with the kids. Relationships take priority. Help them practice these principles now.

Tip 3: Eat the Apple

Well, okay, you don’t have to use an Apple product, but do take advantage of technology.

Praise playlists, daily devotionals, Bible apps, memory verses. Wait time, in-between time, and soccer practice instantly become sweet moments with God.

Have the kids do the same. Reward efforts to read more Scripture, memorize verses, worship and pray. A Sonic gift card goes a long way and it’s a small price to pay for spiritual growth.

Text and call your spouse and kids through the day. (Yes, kids check their phones in class.) Let them know they’re on your mind.

A Chill in the Air

We began with room temperature relationships. So, what might cause a cool down? We get a hint in Matthew 24:12:

Because of the increase in wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.

Satan prefers you frozen, but he’ll take lukewarm too. We’re bombarded daily by culture and flesh, but look again:

. . . the love of most will grow cold.

Most. Not all. Not us. Feed the flame.

Questions:

When is it easiest to let time with God slide?

What is your greatest obstacle to time with Him?

Where can you reclaim time, even five to ten minutes?

How can technology help?

What reward can you set for a week of intentional commitment?
